Blackwater rafting - the definition There has been plenty of discussion about what this phrase means, but one thing it definitely is not, is Whitewater rafting under the ground. Other words that describe Blackwater rafting are toobing, tubing or cave rafting. The water is mostly quite calm, with only a few if any rapids. In summer, water levels can be very low in all the caves. On a scale of 1-10, Blackwater rapids typically rate about 1 or 2. All Blackwater options at Waitomo include significant amounts of walking underground.
Rambo Rating Participants must be moderately fit to take part in our trips. You'd have to be able to go bushwalking or skiing for a day for example. Despite having taken over half a million people underground, there has never been a serious client injury. Yes, we do get the occasional twisted ankle or shoulder. With the Rambo Rating, we have attempted to give you an idea of the physical impact of the trip.
